GROUP CLASSES AT K9OLOGY

 

We welcome you to join Charlotte at the K9ology Center in Sperryville for weekly group classes! As always, our attendance is limited to an average of 4 participants to ensure a truly semi-private learning environment. We offer a variety of classes for pet dogs and performance sports! Make sure to check back regularly to find our offerings!

PET DOG TRAINING CLASSES

PUPPY SOCIALIZATION & PLAY

SUNDAYS at 2:30-3PM

 

These ongoing play and socialization lessons are here to help rural dogs have safe, structured, and curated experience to help prepare them for the world! These lessons are FREE for any dogs residing within Rappahannock, Page, Culpeper, Fauquier, and Warren counties! 
 

  • Gentle exposure to different sounds including fireworks, thunderstorms, heavy machinery, and 

  • Acclimation to restraint and handling for vet exams / grooming 

  • Appropriate interactions and greetings with strangers

  • Polite interactions and greetings with other dogs on leash 

  • Curating positive play through controlled interactions that allow for communication and minimize over arousal 

  • Exposure to different textures and equipment pieces to build resilience to novelty 

The intention is to help create a puppy who develops into a confident, curious, and adaptable canine companion!

Requirements: For puppies UNDER 16 weeks at the start of class! As per AVMA guidelines, puppies should have a minimum of one (1) Distemper/Parvo combo vaccine to participate. 

REGISTRATION: Simply book any of our upcoming sessions below ensuring your pup is under 16 weeks of age when participating. You can come as many times as you would like from 8 weeks onwards.

PUPPY ESSENTIALS TRAINING

WEDNESDAYS at 7:15-8PM

 

This 4 week class covers all the essentials to get you and your pup started on the right paw! We introduce age and developmentally appropriate exercise to help you lay the foundation of an adaptable, resilient, willing, and engaging puppy partner. As part of class we will cover: 

  • Toilet Training & Routine 

  • Crate Training & Prevention 

  • Play Biting 

  • Addressing Developmental 

  • Household Integration and Management 

  • Socialization 

  • Engagement and name recognition 

  • Walking on leash and greetings 

  • Sit / Down / Come

Requirements: For puppies UNDER 18 weeks at the start of class! As per AVMA guidelines, puppies should have a minimum of one (1) Distemper combo vaccine to participate.

BASIC OBEDIENCE
MONDAYS at 7:15-8PM or SUNDAYS at 4:30-5:15PM

 

This 4 week semi-private class is the perfect starting point and introduction to formal dog training!  
 

We will be covering basic obedience commands including: 

  • Name Recognition and Focus 

  • Touch / Target Training 

  • Sit

  • Down 

  • Come / Recall 

  • Stay

  • Leash Skills and Walking 

  • Polite Greetings 

We will be covering the following handling and training skills: 

  • How to properly reward your dog 

  • Using a Marker during training 

  • Luring your dog into position (without bribery!) 

  • Using verbal and hand signal commands 

  • Leash handling for communication and control 

Requirements: Dogs over 16 weeks must be up-to-date with Rabies, Distemper, and Bordatella vaccines. Dogs must not have prior training or experience.

ONGOING MAINTENANCE LESSONS

SUNDAYS AT 3:15-4PM STARTING IN JULY! 
 

This program is designed to provide K9ology students with regular opportunities to work on distractions, control, real world scenarios, refinement training, handling under guided support and direction. 

Open to all former and existing clients in good standing! Lessons open to:

- Those who have completed our Basics and Impulse Control Class

- Those who have  completed a minimum of 5 Private Lessons

- Participants of our Board and Train program

The best part? There's no commitment! Simply register and pay for the lessons you are able to attend, and let the fun begin! We do limit class to 6 participants so pre-registration is required.

Exercises covered in class include: 

 

👍 Engagement, Emotional Regulation, and Impulse Control

👍 Leash skills, improved communication, and handling skills 

👍 Navigating proofing with distractions 

👍 Manners around people and other dogs 

👍 Elements of CGCA, and CGCU tests 

👍 Context training and real world applications 

👍 and so much more!

🎉 BONUS! Maintenance class attendees are welcome to join us for real-world field trips! Once a month we will be training in a variety of settings including breweries, wineries, parks, and town locations!

IMPULSE CONTROL (LEVEL 2)

SUNDAYS at 5:30-6:15PM
 

This course 4 week covers exercises to help your dog have good manners within the home and beyond! ​​​Great for dogs who have graduated from our Basic Manners class, those ready for more advanced skills and commands.

We will cover the following commands and context scenarios:​

  • WAIT: to keep the dog from bolting out the door as people enter and exit; to keep the dog away from the prep areas or the kitchen while cooking; 

  • PLACE: control behavior used to manage visitor arrival, greetings, begging, and more! 

  • SETTLE: to get dog to calm down after visitors arrive, decompression during moments of stimulation 

  • LEAVE IT: to address counter surfing, to prevent dog from snagging food from guests, to prevent dog from ingesting something dangerous (alcohol, raisins, chocolate)

We will be covering the following handling and training skills: 

  • Shaping behaviors for better compliance 

  • Capturing behavior for improved performance 

  • Rewarding for impulse control and focus 

  • Integrating training into your daily routine 

Requirements: Dogs should have a foundation of sit, down, and stay, in order to excel at class.

CANINE GOOD CITIZEN

THURSDAYS AT 7:15-8PM 

 

Walking your dog can be a pleasure or a chore ... and it all comes down to leash and communication skills! This 4 week class focuses on teaching a variety of maneuvers to make life on a leash more enjoyable!

 

Exercises and skills include: 

  • Greeting Visitors 

  • Sitting Politely for Petting 

  • Allowing basic Exam 

  • Sit / Down / Stay / Come sequencing 

  • REFINED loose lead walking and turns 

  • Passing other dogs on a walk 

  • Passing a crowd of people on a walk 

  • Stop! Or halt with owner 

  • Supervised separation with another person 

Requirements: Dogs should have a general idea of sit, down, stay, and basic walking skills.  A great follow-up class from either our Basics, Impulse, or private lessons!
