GROUP CLASSES AT K9OLOGY SPERRYVILLE / RAPPAHANNOCK

We welcome you to join Charlotte on select days at the K9ology Center in Sperryville for weekly group classes! As always, our attendance is limited to 4 participants to ensure a truly semi-private learning environment. We offer a variety of classes for pet dogs and performance sports! Make sure to check back regularly to find our offerings!

PET DOG TRAINING CLASSES

PUPPY ESSENTIALS (LEVEL 1)

WEDNESDAYS AT 7:30PM
 

This 4 week class covers all the essentials to get you and your pup started on the right paw! We introduce age and developmentally appropriate exercise to help you lay the foundation of an adaptable, resilient, willing, and engaging puppy partner. As part of class we will cover: 

  • Toilet Training 

  • Crate Training 

  • Play Biting 

  • Socialization: sounds, textures, surfaces, play 

  • Getting Used to ... the car, vet, groomer, etc 

  • Handling and Restraint training 

  • Engagement and name recognition 

  • Walking on leash

Requirements: For puppies up to 18 weeks at the start of class! As per AVMA guidelines, puppies should have a minimum of one (1) Distemper combo vaccine to participate.

BASIC OBEDIENCE (LEVEL 1)
MONDAYS at 6:30PM or SUNDAYS at 2:30PM

 

This 4 week semi-private class is the perfect starting point and introduction to formal dog training!  
 

We will be covering basic obedience commands including: 

  • Name Recognition and Focus 

  • Touch / Target Training 

  • Sit

  • Down 

  • Come / Recall 

  • Stay

  • Leash Skills and Walking 

  • Polite Greetings 

We will be covering the following handling and training skills: 

  • How to properly reward your dog 

  • Using a Marker during training 

  • Luring your dog into position (without bribery!) 

  • Using verbal and hand signal commands 

  • Leash handling for communication and control 

Requirements: Dogs over 16 weeks must be up-to-date with Rabies, Distemper, and Bordatella vaccines. Dogs must not have prior training or experience.

  • Not suitable for fearful, anxious, reactive, or aggressive dogs!

HOUSEHOLD MANNERS (LEVEL 2)

SELECT SUNDAYS at 1:00PM
 

This course 4 week covers exercises to help your dog have good manners within the home and beyond! ​​​Great for dogs who have graduated from our Basic Manners class, those ready for more advanced skills and commands.

We will cover the following commands and context scenarios:​

  • WAIT: to keep the dog from bolting out the door as people enter and exit; to keep the dog away from the prep areas or the kitchen while cooking; 

  • PLACE: control behavior used to manage visitor arrival, greetings, begging, and more! 

  • SETTLE: to get dog to calm down after visitors arrive, decompression during moments of stimulation 

  • LEAVE IT: to address counter surfing, to prevent dog from snagging food from guests, to prevent dog from ingesting something dangerous (alcohol, raisins, chocolate)

We will be covering the following handling and training skills: 

  • Shaping behaviors for better compliance 

  • Capturing behavior for improved performance 

  • Rewarding for impulse control and focus 

  • Integrating training into your daily routine 

Requirements: Dogs should have a foundation of sit, down, and stay, in order to excel at class.

MAINTENANCE LESSONS (LEVEL 2)
MONDAYS AT 5:30PM

 

These ​​ongoing training lessons are designed to allow our community members to work on rehearsing, fine tuning, and excelling skills in a safe and supported environment. We will be incorporating a variety of exercises for obedience, focus, impulse control, and more! 

Registration is open to a maximum of 5 participants. Simply sign up in advance for any of the weeks you are able to attend ... come every week, skip a week ... this class is totally flexible based on your needs.  Our curriculum is constantly rotating with activities, exercises, and ways to learn!

Requirements: Dogs must be current or former K9ology students in good standing with a minimum of 2 group classes (4 total) or 5 private lessons in order to attend. Dogs must have current Distemper, Bordatella, and Rabies. 

NOTICE!

STARTING 12/22 and will be held routinely on Mondays at 5:30PM! 

SPORTS AND FUN CLASSES

INTRO TO SCENTWORK! (LEVEL 1)

 

Scentwork is all about unleashing your dog’s superpower - their incredible sense of smell! This sport was developed from detection dog training and is appropriate for all dogs regardless of breed, training level, or age! It's the best game of hide and seek with your dog! 

 

As part of class, you will learn:

  • How dogs smell and how odor works 

  • How to handle your dog while doing searches 

  • Teaching an indicator so your dog will be able to "tell" you where odor is hidden 

  • Teaching search patterns and ensuring work ethic for searches 

We ask owners to bring plenty of high value rewards, your dog on a harness or flat collar (no training collars for this activity), and a regular 4-6ft leash. 

Requirements: No age limitation or restrictions. Not suitable for fearful, anxious, or aggressive dogs. Proof of Rabies, Distemper, and Bordatella vaccines required
